Unveiling of Mandela Portrait
|
On November 30th 2005, the City of Salford will present Nelson Mandela with the freedom of the city. At the same time, Harold Riley's portrait of the great South African will be unveiled in Europe for the first time at a special exhibition.
It is the only portrait which Mandela ever agreed to sit for and will be accompanied by an unfinished canvas and 14 studies on paper.
Following the exhibition at the Lowry Centre, the painting and studies will travel to New York City to be exhibited at the Rockefeller Centre as the centrepeice of Black American History Month. There, they will be seen by around half a million people every day.
The painting will then be auctioned, with all proceeds going to "Imibala", a charity working in the Arts for children living in the townships of South Africa.
